Blue Jeep hood with sharp reflections after machine polishing at Porter’s Detailing

Precision paint correction • Grant Park, IL

RESTORE DEPTH.
ELIMINATE THE HAZE.

Machine polishing that levels defects, removes swirls and restores true optical clarity to your vehicle’s clear coat—measured, tested and finished under high-output shop lighting.

The reality of paint defects

SWIRLS AREN’T PERMANENT. THEY’RE JUST LIGHT SCATTER.

How paint goes dull

Factory clear coat doesn’t go dull on its own. It gets covered in thousands of microscopic scratches—from touch car washes, improper drying, light towel contact, water spots that etch in the sun, and years of oxidation. Each one bends light in a different direction, and the paint reads hazy instead of deep.

Why wax isn’t the answer

Waxes and cheap glazes fill those scratches with oils. It looks better for a few washes, then the defects come right back—because they were never removed.

What correction actually does

Machine correction carefully levels the microscopic edges of the defect itself. Light reflects straight back, and the color and depth you’re seeing is the actual paint—not a filler hiding it.

Restore vs. repaint

DON’T REPAINT IT. RESTORE IT.

Scratches don’t automatically mean a new paint job. In most cases your original factory paint can be restored for a fraction of the cost of refinishing.

01

Cost effective

When suitable for the paint’s condition, correction can improve the existing finish without a full repaint. We assess the vehicle before recommending treatment.

02

Preserves factory finish

Correction works with the existing paint, with the goal of preserving as much factory finish as possible.

03

Far faster turnaround

Body shops keep vehicles for weeks. Most corrections are completed in 24–48 hours.

Correction stages

EVERY VEHICLE IS QUOTED IN PERSON.

Paint depth, paint softness and defect severity vary from car to car. We inspect the vehicle at the shop, then recommend the stage that fits the paint and the result you’re after.

Single-stage machine polish

STAGE 1

Paint enhancement

A focused polishing stage that improves lighter swirls, wash haze, gloss and reflection clarity. Results depend on paint condition, defect depth and available coating thickness. Often suitable preparation for a ceramic coating on newer or well-kept vehicles.

  • Removes light swirls and wash marring
  • Restores gloss and reflection clarity
  • Common prep step before a coating

Compound + finishing polish

STAGE 2

Multi-stage correction

A dedicated cutting stage levels deeper swirls and scratches, followed by a finishing polish for maximum mirror clarity. The right choice for paint with heavier defects or a higher finish objective.

  • Targets moderate to heavy defects
  • Refined with a finishing polish
  • Highest level of clarity we offer

Isolated defect removal

SPOT WORK

Spot correction & sanding

Isolated heavy defect removal, wet sanding on severe scratches, and scratch refinement where clear-coat depth safely allows. Always evaluated panel by panel in person.

The Porter’s correction process

MEASURED. TESTED. THEN POLISHED.

Swipe or use arrows

  1. 01

    Decontamination

Iron remover and a synthetic clay treatment strip embedded grit so polishing never drags contamination across the paint.

  2. 02

    Paint depth readings

Paint condition and coating thickness are assessed across the panels before correction. Readings and a test spot guide how much refinement is appropriate.

  3. 03

    Test spot

We dial in the exact pad, compound and machine combination for your specific clear coat before touching the rest of the vehicle.

  4. 04

    Machine polishing

Systematic panel-by-panel correction under high-output inspection lighting.

  5. 05

    Alcohol panel wipe

Polishing oils are stripped off to reveal the actual corrected paint—no fillers hiding anything.

  6. 06

    Seal or coat

The finish is locked in with a protective sealant, or upgraded to a CCI ceramic coating.

Honest expectations

WHAT POLISHING CAN AND CAN’T FIX.

Correction refines the existing clear coat. Results depend on paint condition, defect depth and available coating thickness; preserving factory finish takes priority over chasing every defect.

What we correct

  • Swirl marks and spiderwebbing
  • Wash and towel marring
  • Light oxidation and clear-coat haze
  • Water spot etching
  • Light scratches that don’t catch a fingernail
  • Dull, flat-looking paint

What can’t be polished out safely

  • Scratches through the clear coat into color or primer
  • Rock chips down to bare metal
  • Clear-coat failure or peeling
  • Dents, creases and body damage

If a defect falls into this list, we’ll tell you up front and recommend the realistic option—often touch-up or refinishing rather than polishing.

Paint correction FAQ

FREQUENT QUESTIONS.

How do I get a price for paint correction?

Every vehicle is quoted in person. Paint depth, paint softness and defect severity vary too much for an accurate number sight unseen, so we inspect the vehicle at the shop in Grant Park and quote from what the paint actually needs. Start with a quote request or call (815) 922-1925.

Is paint correction safe for my clear coat?

We assess paint condition and coating thickness before correction, then use a test spot to guide the polishing approach. The goal is improved gloss and clarity while preserving as much factory finish as possible. Not every panel or defect can safely receive the same treatment.

Will paint correction remove all scratches?

No. Results depend on paint condition, defect depth and available coating thickness. Lighter swirls and haze can often be improved, but deeper scratches may remain. Damage through the clear coat into color, primer or bare metal requires a different approach, such as touch-up or refinishing.

How long does the correction process take?

Most corrections are completed in 24 to 48 hours, depending on vehicle size, the stage of correction and the condition of the paint. We confirm the schedule with you when the vehicle is evaluated.

Do I need a ceramic coating after paint correction?

A sealant or CCI ceramic coating can protect the corrected finish and make routine washing easier. Ceramic coating does not prevent scratches or future wash marring; careful washing and ongoing maintenance remain important. We can recommend protection suited to your vehicle and care routine.
